What information helps an electrician provide an accurate quote?
The most useful quote request includes the suburb, property type, exact number of items, clear photos, switchboard information, access constraints and what outcome you want. For a fault, describe what happens and when. For equipment, include the make and model. Some work still needs an on-site assessment.
Start with the property and outcome
State the suburb, whether the property is a house, apartment, managed rental, commercial premises or construction site, and the result you want. “Install four outdoor lights” is more useful than “lighting work”. “Bedroom breaker trips when the heater runs” is more useful than “power problem”.
Photos that are usually helpful
- A wide photo showing the work area
- A closer photo of the existing fitting or equipment
- The full switchboard with the cover closed
- Labels or model numbers that are visible without dismantling anything
- The likely route between equipment and the switchboard
- Access points, roof hatches or parking positions relevant to the work
For installation work
Include quantities, preferred locations, equipment already purchased, dimensions or floor plans, wall and ceiling type if known, and any strata, tenant, builder or business-access requirements.
For a fault
Describe what happens, how often, what was operating at the time, which breaker or RCD trips, whether the fault is immediate or delayed and any recent work, water, damage, noise or smell.
Why the final quote may still change
Hidden wiring, inaccessible routes, switchboard defects, hazardous materials and faults that require testing cannot always be confirmed remotely. A clear quote should state its assumptions, inclusions and what would trigger a revised scope.
