Why does my air conditioner keep turning off and on?

Normal cycling versus a fault

An inverter air conditioner can reduce its output or pause as the room approaches the target temperature. That is not the same as short cycling, where the system starts and stops frequently without maintaining comfort.

Before assuming a fault, check for a timer, weekly schedule, sleep setting or energy-saving mode. Compare the room temperature with the set point and clean a dirty accessible filter according to the owner’s manual.

The phrase “turns off” can describe different events. Record whether the controller goes blank, the indoor fan stops, the outdoor unit stops while the indoor fan continues, only one ducted zone closes, or the system simply reduces output near the set point. Also note how many minutes it runs and whether the pattern repeats at a similar interval.

Patterns worth recording

• Stops after roughly the same short period: equipment protection, a sensor reading or a control setting may be involved.
• Indoor unit runs but outdoor unit stops: the system needs diagnosis; several electrical, temperature or refrigerant-circuit conditions are possible.
• Display goes completely blank: check whether other equipment has lost power, but do not repeatedly reset a protective device.
• Error code appears: photograph it and use the model-specific error-code guidance. Do not assume codes have the same meaning across brands.
• Only cycles on very hot afternoons: airflow, outdoor-unit conditions, capacity and equipment protection all need consideration.

Why repeated restarts are not a diagnosis

Turning the isolator off and on can clear a temporary control state, but repeated resetting can hide useful fault information and does not fix the cause. If the problem returns, leave the system off and provide the model, timing pattern and any code to the technician.
