Why is my air conditioner tripping the circuit breaker?

The trip is a symptom, not the fault

A circuit breaker or RCD is a protective device. Resetting it may restore power temporarily, but repeated operation means the underlying condition remains. The timing helps a technician narrow the test sequence:

• Trips immediately when switched on: a direct electrical fault, wiring problem or component issue is possible.
• Trips as the outdoor unit starts: the fault may only appear when a motor or compressor is energised.
• Trips after running for a while: heat, moisture, load or an intermittent equipment fault may be involved.
• Trips during rain or after water leakage: leave the system off and report the moisture history.
• Several circuits lose power: identify whether an RCD or upstream device has operated, without removing the switchboard cover.

These patterns are not enough to select a replacement part. Diagnosis may require insulation-resistance, current and component testing, along with inspection of the circuit and equipment.

What to tell the technician

Provide the indoor and outdoor model numbers, which switch operated, when it trips, whether an error code appears, and whether there has been recent water ingress, storm activity or other electrical work. A clear switchboard photo taken without removing covers can help identify the installation.

What the diagnostic scope should separate

The initial scope should say whether it includes testing the air-conditioning equipment, its circuit and the relevant switchboard protection, and what additional work would require approval. The finding should identify whether the condition is within the equipment, fixed wiring or broader electrical installation rather than passing the customer between trades without a documented result.

Repair price cannot be established from the trip timing alone. Access, fault intermittency, equipment components, circuit condition and any water or heat damage can change the work. Additional repair, parts or switchboard work should be explained and approved after the cause has been tested.
