EV Charger Installation Perth
Get the right EV charger for your car, property and charging routine
Neighbourhood Electrical & Air installs fixed EV chargers for homes, managed properties and workplaces across Perth.
Before work begins, we assess the vehicle, proposed charger, parking position, cable route, switchboard and available electrical capacity. This helps determine the appropriate charging rate and whether the job needs additional work such as switchboard alterations, load management, trenching or three-phase cabling.
Your written scope identifies the charger, configured output, dedicated circuit, electrical protection, mounting, cable route, testing and any additional work included in the quote.
- Licensed WA electrical contractor
- Malaga-based Perth team
- Home and workplace installations
- Testing and handover included

Start with daily use
Choose a charger for the way you actually drive
The charger with the highest advertised output is not automatically the best choice.
A useful home charging setup depends on:
- How far you normally drive each day
- How long the vehicle is parked at home
- Your vehicle's maximum AC charging rate
- Whether the property has single-phase or three-phase power
- Other large electrical loads on the property
- Whether you want scheduled, solar-aware or load-managed charging
- The cable route between the switchboard and parking position
- Whether another EV may need charging in future
A standard household power point can provide approximately 2.4kW. Fixed home chargers commonly operate from around 7kW to 22kW, but the actual charging rate is limited by the least capable part of the system: the vehicle, charger setting, electrical supply or load-management control.
For many drivers, a properly planned 7kW charger provides ample overnight charging without the added cost of pursuing a higher output that the vehicle or property may not use.
When is a dedicated charger worth installing?
A fixed charger may be worthwhile when:
- Standard power-point charging is too slow for your weekly driving
- You want charging ready before a new EV arrives
- You want the convenience of plugging in each evening
- You want scheduled or solar-aware charging
- Two vehicles will share the charging location
- Staff, fleet vehicles, tenants or customers need charging access
- You want a safer and neater permanent cable arrangement

What an EV charger installation can include
Depending on the property and charger, the service can include:
- Home chargers in garages, carports and suitable outdoor locations
- Workplace and small commercial charging
- Chargers for managed residential properties
- Customer-supplied chargers, subject to compatibility review
- Single-phase and three-phase charging assessments
- A dedicated charger circuit
- Charger-specific circuit and leakage protection
- Switchboard alterations where required
- Dynamic load management
- Compatible solar-aware charging controls
- Surface conduit, roof-space, wall-cavity, subfloor or other suitable cable routes
- Underground cabling where included in the agreed scope
- Outdoor mounting and mechanical protection
- Freestanding posts or bollards

The standard residential service is generally focused on fixed AC wall charging. Large public DC fast-charging projects and bidirectional vehicle-to-home or vehicle-to-grid systems require separate technical and network assessment.
Site and system planning
What we assess before installation
Vehicle and charger
We confirm the vehicle's maximum AC charging rate and the specifications of the proposed charger.
If you have not selected a charger yet, useful features to consider include:
- Tethered or untethered cable
- Scheduled charging
- App control
- Solar-aware charging
- Dynamic load management
- Access control
- Energy-use reporting
- Support for more than one vehicle
Connected features vary between models. App services, cloud functions, subscriptions and third-party integrations should be checked against the exact product rather than assumed from the brand.
Switchboard and electrical supply
We check the supply arrangement, main switch, available switchboard space, existing protection, major electrical loads and proposed charging rate.
A spare space in the switchboard does not necessarily mean the property has enough electrical capacity. Equally, a crowded switchboard does not automatically mean a complete upgrade is required.
Cable route
The visible distance between the switchboard and car is rarely the whole story. Cabling may need to travel through a roof space, ceiling, wall cavity, subfloor, external conduit or trench.
Access and finished building surfaces can affect labour and cost more than the straight-line distance.
Charger position
The mounting position should account for the vehicle's charging port, cable reach, trip hazards, weather exposure, wall strength, manufacturer clearances, possible vehicle impact and normal day-to-day use.
Detached garages and driveway parking may require external conduit, underground cabling or a freestanding mounting post.
Testing and handover
After installation, the circuit and charger are tested and the configured output is confirmed. We explain normal operation, isolation and any agreed scheduling or load-management controls.
For applicable electrical installation work in WA, the electrical contractor must provide the required electrical safety certificate within 28 days.
Compare the complete scope
How much does EV charger installation cost in Perth?
The charger model alone does not determine the installation price.
As a broad Perth market guide, published residential pricing commonly falls around$1,200 to $3,500, although inclusions vary significantly. Some advertised prices include the charger; others cover installation only.
Projects can exceed that range when they involve long cable routes, switchboard work, load management, trenching, difficult access, three-phase alterations or a network supply upgrade.
A straightforward installation usually has:
- A suitable existing switchboard
- Adequate electrical capacity
- A short, accessible cable route
- A wall-mounted charger
- No trenching or major building work
- No major switchboard or supply upgrade
- Required charger accessories already available
Costs can increase when the job needs:
- Long or difficult cable runs
- Restricted roof-space or subfloor access
- External conduit across finished surfaces
- Underground cabling or trenching
- A detached garage or rear parking space
- Dynamic load-management hardware
- Solar monitoring equipment
- Three-phase cabling
- Outdoor mechanical protection
- Data cabling or improved communications
Work such as a major switchboard upgrade, Western Power supply upgrade, concrete or civil work, surface repairs, custom mounting structures, strata metering systems and ongoing software subscriptions may be quoted separately.
Know what your quote includes
A useful EV charger quote should identify:
- Charger model
- Configured charging output
- Cable route
- Dedicated circuit
- Electrical protection
- Mounting method
- Testing and handover
- Any load-management equipment
- Switchboard work
- Trenching or civil work
- App or control configuration
- Whether charger hardware is supplied
- GST and known exclusions
That makes it easier to compare quotes on the actual scope rather than the headline price alone.
Match output to the job
7kW, 11kW or 22kW: how much charging power do you need?
| Charger output | Typical electrical arrangement | Where it may make sense |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 7kW | Usually single-phase | Regular overnight home charging where the car is parked for several hours |
| Up to 11kW | Usually three-phase | Vehicles that accept 11kW AC charging and properties with suitable three-phase supply |
| Up to 22kW | Three-phase | High-use vehicles, shorter charging windows, selected workplaces or deliberate future planning |
A 22kW charger will not charge at 22kW if the vehicle's onboard AC charger accepts only 7kW or 11kW.
Higher-capacity hardware can still be selected for future vehicles or other features, but the extra output should provide a practical benefit rather than being chosen on the headline number alone.
A simple charging-time estimate is:
Energy to be added in kWh ÷ actual charging rate in kWFor example, adding 40kWh at an actual 7kW rate takes roughly six hours before allowing for normal charging losses and variations.
Do you need three-phase power?
Not necessarily.
A 7kW single-phase charger is often sufficient when a vehicle is parked overnight.
Three-phase becomes more useful when:
- The vehicle accepts faster three-phase AC charging
- Charging windows are short
- Several vehicles need to charge
- Suitable three-phase capacity already exists
- Loads need to be distributed across phases
- Workplace or fleet use requires higher daily energy turnover
Western Power permits a 7kW single-phase charger on a standard single-phase or three-phase connection where the electrical contractor confirms the site's maximum demand remains within the applicable connection limits and other connection requirements are satisfied.
Installing three-phase power solely to obtain a higher charger rating may not be the most economical option. The practical benefit should be weighed against the vehicle's charging limit, normal driving requirements and cost of the electrical work.
Property demand
What if the property does not have enough spare capacity?
An EV charger is a sustained electrical load, so it has to be considered alongside other equipment such as:
- Ducted or multiple split-system air conditioners
- Electric hot-water systems
- Pool equipment
- Induction cooking
- Ovens and other large appliances
- Solar inverters and batteries
- Workshop equipment
- A second EV charger
If the proposed charging rate would push the property beyond its available capacity, possible solutions include:
- Configuring the charger to a lower output
- Charging at scheduled times
- Installing dynamic load management
- Sharing available capacity between several chargers
- Upgrading the property's network connection
Dynamic load management
Dynamic load management monitors overall electricity use and reduces the EV charger's output when other loads are high.
This can allow useful EV charging without designing the system around a peak load that occurs only occasionally.
Compatible charger hardware and suitable monitoring equipment are required, so load management needs to be considered as part of the installation design rather than added as an assumption later.
Will the switchboard need upgrading?
Not every EV charger requires a complete switchboard upgrade.
Additional switchboard work may be necessary where:
- There is insufficient physical room for the new circuit and protection
- Existing equipment is damaged or unsuitable
- The main-switch arrangement requires alteration
- The board contains ageing rewireable fuses
- Existing circuits or protective devices need corrective work
- The enclosure cannot safely accommodate the additions
- The property is already approaching its available capacity
The quote should distinguish between work specifically required for the charger, existing defects requiring attention and optional improvements for future capacity.
A new EV charger should not be used as a reason to recommend unrelated switchboard work without explaining why that work is needed.
Use what the system can measure
Can an EV charger use your rooftop solar?
Potentially, but "solar charging" can refer to different functions.
Scheduled charging
The charger starts during selected daylight hours.
This can help align charging with solar generation but does not continuously measure whether the property is actually exporting surplus solar energy.
Solar-surplus charging
Compatible equipment measures electricity flowing to and from the grid and varies EV charging according to available solar export.
Depending on the charger and energy system, this may require additional sensors, meters, communications equipment or proprietary accessories.
Performance can also depend on:
- The charger's minimum operating current
- Single-phase or three-phase operation
- Changing cloud cover and household loads
- Vehicle charging behaviour
- Compatibility with the solar or energy-management system
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet or other communications
- Manufacturer software and subscriptions
We clarify what the selected charger and control equipment can actually do.
The electrical installation itself cannot guarantee the ongoing reliability of a third-party app, cloud service or home internet connection.
Shared buildings
EV charger installation for strata properties
Installing a charger in an apartment or strata complex involves more than connecting one parking bay.
Before installation, the project may need to resolve:
- Written strata or building-management approval
- Use of common walls, ceilings and cable routes
- Which electrical supply and meter will serve the charger
- Allocation of the building's available capacity
- Electricity metering and cost recovery
- User identification or access control
- Communications in basement parking
- Fire-rated walls and penetrations
- Provision for additional chargers in future
- Building access and shutdown coordination
WA Government guidance recommends treating strata EV charging as a coordinated building project rather than installing individual chargers without considering future demand.
Tenants should obtain the landlord's written approval before requesting fixed electrical alterations.
Fleet, staff and visitors
Workplace and commercial EV charging
Workplace charging should be designed around how the site and vehicles actually operate.
Useful questions include:
- How many vehicles need charging now?
- How many may need charging in three to five years?
- How long is each vehicle normally parked?
- Are chargers for staff, fleet vehicles, visitors or the public?
- Is access control required?
- Is energy reporting or user billing required?
- Will chargers share available capacity?
- Is reliable internet or data coverage available at the parking bays?
- Who will manage accounts, software and subscriptions?
Several lower-powered chargers using load sharing can sometimes provide a better operational result than one charger consuming most of the site's available capacity.
The right design depends on vehicle dwell time and how much energy needs to be delivered each day.
Photos often help us start
Get an accurate EV charger quote
A straightforward home installation can often be assessed from clear photos and equipment information. More complicated cable routes, switchboards, strata sites and workplaces may require an on-site assessment.
For an initial assessment, send:
- A photo of the complete closed switchboard
- A photo of the meter area
- A photo of the proposed charger wall and parking position
- Photos showing the likely cable route
- Vehicle make and model
- Charger make and model, if already purchased
- Your suburb
- Whether the property has solar or a battery
- Whether the property is rented, strata-titled or commercially managed
We will confirm the appropriate next step and provide a written scope identifying the charger, output, cable route, circuit protection, mounting and any related switchboard or load-management work.
A straightforward home installation with a suitable switchboard and accessible cable route will often take approximately half a day.
Switchboard alterations, trenching, difficult access or more complex controls can require a full day or a separate visit.

EV charger installation FAQs
Can you install a Tesla Wall Connector or another charger I have already purchased?
Customer-supplied chargers can be assessed before installation is confirmed.
Send the exact charger model, product label, installation instructions and a photo of the supplied components.
We check whether the unit is suitable for the vehicle, electrical supply, proposed position and required control functions. Missing mounting hardware, sensors or proprietary accessories can delay installation.
Can an EV charger be installed outside?
Many chargers are designed for suitable outdoor locations.
The exact charger model, manufacturer instructions, weather exposure, mounting surface and risk of vehicle impact still need to be considered. Some installations may require mechanical protection or a different mounting position.
What information should I provide for a strata installation?
Send the parking-bay details, relevant building plans if available and any correspondence or approval from the strata manager.
Metering, common-property access, available electrical capacity and planning for future chargers may need to be resolved before work proceeds.
Will I receive an electrical safety certificate?
Yes. For applicable electrical installation work, WA electrical contractors must provide the required electrical safety certificate within 28 days.
Keep it with the charger and property records.
Can you install vehicle-to-home or vehicle-to-grid charging?
Bidirectional charging requires a separate assessment covering the charger, compatible vehicle, switchboard, network requirements and current product approvals.
Do not purchase a V2H or V2G system on the assumption that it can be connected in the same way as a standard AC wall charger.
