When lighting needs more than a like-for-like replacement
A room can be bright but still put a kitchen bench in shadow, reflect on a screen or create glare above a lounge.
A lighting redesign may be useful when:
- Benches, desks, mirrors, stairs or entrances remain difficult to see

Indoor lighting and LED downlights
We plan new or replacement lighting for kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, laundries, hallways, stairs, home offices, garages and renovation areas. Options include:

A downlight upgrade is not always a one-for-one swap. Existing cut-out size, transformers or drivers, wiring, insulation, ceiling access and circuit condition affect which replacements are suitable. A new layout also needs to account for ceiling height, beam and output, task areas, sightlines, furniture, joists, roof-space obstructions and adjacent rooms.
LEDs generally use less energy and last longer than halogen lamps, but fitting quality, operating hours and controls still matter. Efficiency gains can be lost if a few old lights are replaced with an unnecessary number of new ones.
Pendant, chandelier and feature lighting
Before installation, we check the fitting’s size, weight, suspension method, electrical requirements and included mounting components. Heavy fittings may need extra structural support; multi-drop pendants need precise marking and adjustment; high ceilings may require access equipment beyond a standard ladder.
For kitchen-island or dining-table pendants, the position should follow the installed bench or table rather than the centre of the room. Confirm cabinetry and furniture locations before the electrical point is fixed.
Outdoor, garden and security lighting
We can assess entry, path, step, driveway, patio, deck, garden, garage, wall-mounted, sensor and security lighting, including timers, daylight controls, cable routes and trenching.
Product and installation choices depend on actual exposure and mounting position. Direct weather, coastal conditions, reticulation, soil, gardening and vehicle movement can affect enclosure ratings, fixings and cable protection. Maintenance access also matters after landscaping is complete.
Effective security lighting depends on aiming, detection zone and timeout, not brightness alone. Poor positioning can create glare, leave the useful area dark or cause intrusive spill. WA local governments may investigate artificial light that creates a nuisance for neighbouring properties or public spaces.
Switching, dimming and selected smart controls
Control options include standard, two-way and multi-way switching; compatible LED dimmers; occupancy or motion sensors; timers; daylight control; and selected smart switches. Task, general and feature lights can be placed on separate groups so the room does not operate in one all-or-nothing mode.
“Dimmable” does not mean compatible with every dimmer. The fitting, driver, dimmer type, circuit conditions and number of connected lights must work together. Poor combinations can buzz, flicker, start late, dim unevenly or remain faintly illuminated.
For smart lighting, decide who will manage app accounts, network setup and future support. Check whether ordinary wall control still works if the internet, cloud service or smart platform is unavailable.
Offices, shops and managed properties
We assess general, task, display and exterior lighting for suitable offices, shops, workshops, showrooms, managed properties and small commercial premises. Quotes may need to allow for customer access, shutdowns, ceiling height, lifts, existing fit-out wiring, shelving or machinery, staged or after-hours work, sensor zoning, disposal and site documentation.
Emergency lighting and exit signs have separate design, testing and certification obligations in relevant buildings. A quote for general or decorative lighting should say whether those systems are included, excluded or require a separate compliance scope.

Give each fitting a job
- General lighting supports safe movement and ordinary room use.
- Task lighting puts usable light on benches, desks, mirrors and work areas.
- Feature lighting highlights art, displays, textures or architectural details.
- Low-level lighting supports movement at night without lighting the whole property.
Not every room needs all four. The useful question is what each fitting must achieve before its position is fixed.
Compare output, beam and glare, not wattage alone
Watts measure electricity consumption; lumens indicate light output. Beam distribution then affects where that output lands. Two fittings with similar lumens can feel different because one spreads soft, wide light and another creates a narrow, intense beam.
Glare can come from direct sightlines, exposed bright sources or a beam that is too intense for its position. A deeper fitting, wider beam, moved position, wall-washing approach or separate task light may improve comfort more than simply reducing output.
Choose colour temperature and rendering together
Warmer light, often 2700K–3000K, is commonly chosen for bedrooms, living areas and relaxed evening spaces. Neutral or cooler light, often 3500K–4000K, may suit kitchens, laundries, garages, offices and task areas. These are preferences, not fixed room rules: finishes, natural light, adjoining rooms and personal comfort change how a fitting appears.
Colour rendering affects how naturally food, timber, paint, fabrics, artwork and skin tones appear. It is especially relevant over preparation benches, makeup mirrors, artwork and retail displays. For a large order, view a sample in the actual room before committing to every fitting.
Let the building constrain the drawing early
Cabinet doors, ceiling fans, smoke alarms, air-conditioning outlets, joists, insulation, ducts, pipes, concrete slabs, fire-rated construction and inaccessible cavities can change cable routes or fitting positions. In an existing room, there may be a sensible trade-off between an ideal drawing and the cost of opening finished surfaces, relocating points and repairing old cut-outs. That trade-off should be explicit in the quote.

Confirm assessment and access
We determine whether the project can be quoted from the information supplied or needs an on-site assessment. We may ask about roof access, ceiling construction, cut-outs, fitting models, switchboard condition, planned furniture, strata requirements or site operating hours.
Agree the layout, fittings and controls
Straightforward work may need a marked layout and fitting schedule. Multi-room or mixed-use projects may need room-by-room decisions about lighting layers, switching groups, dimming, sensors and feature positions.
Our standard design service is practical layout, fitting and control planning connected with the electrical installation. It does not automatically include independent architectural-lighting consultancy, formal photometric modelling, emergency-lighting design or complex building-control integration. Those services must be identified and scoped separately.
Compare a defined scope
The quote should state:
- Fitting quantities and models, and who supplies them
- Existing replacements versus new or relocated wiring points
- Switching, dimming, sensors and smart-control work
- Ceiling, roof-space and concealed-condition assumptions
- Outdoor trenching, cable protection and access equipment
- Circuit, RCD or switchboard work
- Removal, disposal and testing
- Patching, painting, surface repair and other exclusions
- How variations or unexpected conditions will be handled
These details make quotes with the same apparent number of lights meaningfully comparable.
Install, test and record
After installation, the relevant circuits, switches, dimmers, sensors and agreed controls are tested and explained. Keep fitting models, colour-temperature choices, control details and electrical safety documents with the property records so future replacements can match.
Scope before price
What affects lighting installation cost?
A like-for-like replacement at an accessible, suitable existing point is usually a smaller scope than creating openings, running cable, adding controls or redesigning several rooms.
Work is generally simpler to price when it involves accessible fittings in existing positions, compatible downlights using suitable cut-outs or a standard customer-supplied fitting on a suitable point. Grouping several well-documented replacements into one visit can also reduce uncertainty.
More assessment is usually needed for:
- New or relocated points and multi-room layouts
- High, raked, concrete or inaccessible ceilings
- Heavy fittings needing support
- Limited roof-space access or unidentified wiring
- Outdoor trenching, difficult mounting or surface repair
- New switching groups, multi-way control or smart integration
- Flicker, damage, tripping or circuit faults
- RCD, switchboard or circuit alterations
- Commercial lifts, shutdowns, approvals or staged access
A written quote should separate fitting supply from installation and identify access, wiring and making-good assumptions.

Licensed electrical work
Licensing, safety documents and WA requirements
Fixed wiring, switches and fixed light fittings must be worked on by a person holding the relevant electrical licence. Neighbourhood Electrical & Air publishes Electrical Contractor Licence EC14280.
For electrical installation work, contractors generally provide an electrical safety certificate within 28 days. WA guidance includes exemptions such as maintenance and like-for-like equipment replacement, so the document required depends on the actual scope. A new point, altered wiring or added switch is different from changing a user-replaceable globe.
WA residential properties being sold, rented, hired or offered as short-stay accommodation must have at least two RCDs protecting the relevant socket-outlet and lighting final subcircuits. A lighting job does not automatically require a full switchboard upgrade; the existing board, circuit and proposed work determine whether related work is needed.
Customer-supplied and imported fittings must be suitable for the location and comply with applicable Australian safety requirements. Send the model or product link before booking. An electrician may decline an unsafe or unsuitable fitting.

How many downlights do I need?
There is no reliable room-size-only formula. Ceiling height, fitting output, beam, finishes, furniture, natural light and task locations all change the answer. A kitchen with dark cabinetry and several work surfaces needs a different layout from a pale bedroom. The goal is sufficient usable light without unnecessary fittings, shadowed work areas or excessive glare.
Can you install lights I have already purchased?
Often, after the product is checked. Send the model, link, dimensions and weight before booking. Large pendants, chandeliers and imported fittings may need extra support, assembly, mounting components or compliance checks. Compatibility with the supply, location, dimmer and other controls must also be confirmed.
How long does installation take?
Straightforward replacements may be completed in one attendance. New layouts, high ceilings, outdoor work, multi-room projects or products that must be ordered can require separate assessment and installation stages. The quote should identify dependencies on cabinetry, plastering, painting, landscaping, approvals or other trades.
What changes for apartments and strata properties?
Work affecting common property, shared ceilings, external walls or building systems may need approval. Confirm parking, lift bookings, permitted work hours, isolation arrangements and access to electrical infrastructure before the appointment.
Can I buy lighting design without installation?
The standard service is practical lighting planning tied to an electrical installation project. If you need independent product specification, formal calculations, rendered concepts or design-only documentation for a complex architectural project, a specialist lighting consultant may be more appropriate.
