Why the electrical scope should be confirmed early

The air conditioner, electrical circuit and switchboard are one installation. If the circuit route or switchboard work is discovered after the equipment position has been chosen, the customer may face a changed scope, visible cabling or a delay.

Western Australia’s restricted air-conditioning electrical-licence guidance treats new fixed circuit wiring between the switchboard and air-conditioner isolator as electrical installation work outside the restricted refrigeration licence scope.

What determines the circuit requirement

• Unit make, model and rated electrical input
• Manufacturer installation instructions
• Existing circuit use and protective devices
• Cable route and installation conditions
• Required local isolation
• Switchboard space and condition
• Other large loads at the property

Can an existing circuit be reused?

Sometimes existing wiring may be suitable, but that cannot be confirmed from the breaker label or a photograph alone. The installer needs to verify the circuit and equipment requirements. A circuit that has previously operated an older unit is not automatically suitable for a different replacement system.

What to send with a quote request

Provide the proposed unit model, room or floor-plan details, photos of the possible indoor and outdoor locations and a clear photo of the full switchboard. For a replacement, include the old model and existing cable or isolator location if visible without removing covers.
