A little more comfort. A lot less guesswork.

Start with the room.
We’ll help with the rest.

A split system pairs an indoor wall unit with an outdoor unit. Reverse cycle models cool in summer and heat in winter, making them a practical option for a bedroom, home office or open living space.

01 / Get the size right

Choosing the right size split system air conditioner

Floor area is a useful starting point. Windows, afternoon sun, ceiling height and insulation change how much heating and cooling a space needs.

An upstairs bedroom under a hot roof can need different capacity from a shaded room of the same size. Kitchens, computers and the number of people using the space also add to its heat load. We consider those conditions alongside where the air can travel.

The kW on an air conditioner describes its heating or cooling output. It isn’t a room-size code or the electricity it uses. An undersized unit may struggle, but buying a bigger unit won’t solve a layout that blocks airflow.

What makes up the installation?

A quote should explain
the whole job.

“Standard installation” doesn’t tell you enough on its own. We plan the actual pipe route, drainage, mounting and electrical work, so you can compare the same scope.

01The equipment
Exact indoor and outdoor models, heating and cooling capacity, controls and equipment price.
02The installation
Unit positions, pipe length and cover, drainage, wall penetrations and outdoor mounting.
03The electrical work
Circuit requirements, cable route, isolator and any switchboard work identified for your system.
04The handover
Commissioning, controller demonstration, applicable paperwork, packaging and old-unit removal if agreed.

What can change the installed price? Longer pipe runs, difficult wall construction, upstairs access, a drain pump, switchboard work and old-system removal can all add work. Ask for the pipe and cable allowances, mounting, visible finishes and disposal to be clear in each quote. Our installation cost guide explains how to compare the scope.

03 / A place for everything

Every home has
its own installation story.

The same air conditioner can involve very different work in two homes. Here are the layouts we’ll consider when planning yours.

01 / A short, direct route

Back-to-back

Indoor and outdoor units on opposite sides of an external wall. Often the simplest pipe and drainage route, subject to access and electrical supply.

02 / Keep ground space clear

Wall-mounted outdoor unit

A suitable wall and brackets support the outdoor unit. We check clearances, vibration, service access and where sound will travel.

03 / Plan the connections

Internal wall or longer run

An internal wall can mean longer pipes, visible pipe cover or a different drain route. A condensate pump may be needed if gravity drainage is not possible.

04 / Check height and access

Upstairs or apartment

Installation height, safe access, outdoor space and strata requirements can affect the job. Send photos so we can identify what needs checking.

Indoor position, drainage and the finished appearance

The indoor unit needs clear space to draw in air and access to remove its filters. We consider the bed, sofa or desk so the airflow reaches the room without blowing straight at you where possible.

Water collected during cooling needs a suitable drain outlet. A gravity drain needs a continuous fall; if a pump is needed, we discuss its noise and maintenance before including it. For internal walls or longer runs, we also agree how the pipes, cable and drain will be concealed or covered, and how wall penetrations will be finished.

Outdoor airflow, noise and service access

The outdoor unit needs a firm base or suitable brackets, clear airflow and space for future servicing. A narrow side passage can reflect sound towards nearby windows, so we consider your bedrooms and neighbouring properties when choosing the position. The model’s clearances and sound data matter as much as finding an empty patch of wall.

A few photos can tell us a lot. Show us the room, the proposed outdoor position and the switchboard with its cover closed. We’ll explain whether a site visit is needed.

Think beyond one room

One room, a few rooms,
or the whole home?

One large wall split won’t usually cool closed bedrooms. Compare how each layout serves the rooms you actually use, and the space you have inside and out. Our Perth air conditioning overview also covers evaporative cooling and the service options for a system you already own.

Several rooms running at once? A multi-split shares its outdoor unit’s capacity between the connected rooms. The number of connections doesn’t mean every indoor unit can deliver its full rated output at the same time. We check the exact model combination against the rooms you expect to use together. Each indoor unit still needs pipework, cabling and drainage, so fewer outdoor units doesn’t necessarily mean a simpler installation.

Think about the cost
of everyday comfort.

Once capacity is right, compare models of a similar size using theZoned Energy Rating Label for your climate zone. Heating and cooling have separate ratings. Check annual energy use in kWh as well as the stars, and compare the indoor and outdoor sound ratings.

Label figures help compare equipment; your electricity tariff, settings and hours of use affect the actual bill. Insulation and clean filters matter too. Our split-system servicing helps you look after the system over time.

The details make the difference

A closer look

From the indoor position to the outdoor connections, there’s more to an installation than the unit on the wall. These photos from our work show some of those details.

Equipment and workmanship have different support paths. Confirm the manufacturer’s warranty and any registration requirements for your selected model, and who to contact if a fault could involve either the unit or its installation. You can also read our workmanship warranty before accepting the quote.

Does a split system need a new electrical circuit?

Some models need a new circuit; others may use a suitable existing supply. We check the selected model, wiring, switchboard and cable route before confirming the electrical scope. Air conditioning refrigerant work and fixed electrical wiring require the appropriate licences for each part of the job. We plan both together.

Read our dedicated circuit guide and WA’s guidance on having electrical work done for licence checks and certificate information.

What happens to the old system during replacement?

We assess existing pipes, cables and mounting before deciding what can be reused. Their condition and the new manufacturer’s requirements determine the answer. The quote should identify decommissioning, refrigerant recovery, removal of the old units and any wall repairs or finishing included. Confirm those details before comparing a replacement price with a new-installation price.

Split system air conditioning FAQs

Still weighing up your options? Talk it through with our team.

Call 0491 460 301
What size split system do I need?

Room dimensions are the starting point. Ceiling height, windows, afternoon sun, insulation, occupancy and connected spaces all influence the heating and cooling capacity required. Send measurements and photos if you have them; we confirm the final capacity and model from the room and property.

How much does split-system installation cost in Perth?

Your total depends on the equipment and the installation scope. The supply-only prices shown on this page include GST; installation and delivery are quoted separately. Pipe routes, mounting, drainage, access, electrical work and removal of an old unit can change the installed price. Request a written quote for your property before comparing totals.

What does a standard back-to-back installation include?

Back-to-back describes units on opposite sides of the same external wall, with a short connecting route. It does not define an allowance for pipes, electrical cable, brackets or disposal. Your written quote should identify these inclusions and any extra work for your property.

Can one split system cool the whole house?

A wall split is usually chosen for one room or an open area. Air does not travel well through closed doors, around corners or between storeys. For several rooms, we can compare separate splits, a compatible multi-split arrangement or ducted air conditioning against how you use the home.

Can you replace an existing split system?

Yes. Send the current model details and photos of both units. We assess the old system, new capacity, mounting and electrical supply. Existing pipes and wiring are reused only where their condition and the new equipment requirements allow it. Removal of the old equipment should be included in the agreed scope.

Can you quote from photos?

Photos can help us assess a straightforward job. Include a wide view of the room, the proposed indoor wall, outdoor position and the switchboard with its cover closed. If access, drainage or wiring cannot be established from photos, we explain what needs an on-site check and any assessment fee before you book.

Which split-system brands can I compare?

Our published equipment catalogue includes Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ciara, Fujitsu Comfort and Lifestyle, and Hitachi AirHome ranges. Model suitability, availability and final equipment inclusions are confirmed with your quote. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Electric are different manufacturers.

Who handles the electrical work and aftercare?

We plan the air conditioning and electrical work together. Our business details include WA electrical contractor EC14280 and ARC refrigerant authorisation AU066760. Equipment warranty terms depend on the manufacturer and model; our workmanship warranty and ongoing servicing options are available through the site.
